This Lego Machine Plays Some Sweet Electronic Music

By: | May 1st, 2014

Alex Allmont is on his way to a Ph.D. in polyrhythmic music, but he is also a full-time coder with a passion for Legos.

Allmont’s creation is essentially a complex Lego machine that whips up electronic music through sampled drums and digital notes from a Roland TB303 synthesizer.

Originally, Allmont’s project, which he calls Play House, was built for the AudioGraft music festival in England, but it has turned into a bigger creation since then.

Working to make Play House more complex, Allmont hopes to one day add real-life drums to the mix…

Patience is a virtue so, for now, enjoy the soothing tunes of Play House:

Play House is an automata that generates slow hypnotic acid house through mechanisms built from LEGO Technic. This piece was made for AudioGraft 2014 with a commission from Oxford Contemporary Music.
