Adidas Collaborator Y-3 Helped Virgin Galactic Design These New Nifty Flight Suits

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic always seem to have branding down pat, which is why it’s a bit of a surprise that the company’s new prototype flight suits and boots look so simplistic.

But… I know better than to question a design created with Adidas Collaborator Y-3, a project spearheaded by Adam Wells, Virgin Galactic’s design head, and Y-3’s Lawrence Midwood.

While the flight suits don’t feature all the colors we’ve become accustomed to with Virgin Galactic, the key thing to remember is these suits are not a fashion statement.

In fact, Y-3 and Virgin say that the flight suit was designed to fully support the pilot of SpaceShipTwo’s natural seating position, something that the companies say they have already tested.

The boots do feature a bit of color, donning the Virgin logo, and are comprised of fire-resistant Nomex material, in addition to Adidas’ own AdiPRENE cushioned insoles.

As far as space boots go, I’d say they’re pretty damn slick.

While Virgin Galactic’s planes haven’t seen any action since the tragic accident that took place back in 2014, the company seems poised to bounce back and move forward with its suborbital space flights this year.
