An innovative company, ‘Vortex Bladeless,’ wants to completely change the way we get energy from the wind. They built the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine, and they boast that their wind turbine is the most efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly wind turbine available. They claim that Vortex saves 53% in manufacturing costs and 51% in operating costs compared to conventional wind turbines.

Science behind the turbine: This wind turbine doesn’t spin the wind. When wind hits a structure and flows over its surfaces, it generates a cyclical pattern of vortices at the tail end of the flow. This phenomenon is called vorticity and is used to generate energy from this Vortex Bladeless wind turbine.

More about the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine: Unlike massive towers with blades that capture blowing winds, the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine looks like a huge straw that oscillates in the wind.

As no gears or bearings are involved in this wind turbine, it requires much less maintenance. Moreover, there is no contact between moving parts, so there is no need for lubricants or replacement of spare parts either.

The best part is…more power can be generated in less space, as the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine occupies less space and can be installed closer together. David Suriol, co-founder of Spain-based ‘Vortex Bladeless,’ said, “We tested in a wind tunnel to put one Vortex just in front of another and the second one actually benefits from the vortices given off by the first structure”.
