The Noah Oasis Project Transforms Existing Oil Rigs Into Multifunctional, Eco-Friendly Bio-Habitats

The Noah Oasis project, which won honorable mention at the eVolo Skyscraper Competition 2015, aims at dealing with the serious issues of environmental destruction and pollution control.

A team of designers, based in China, has come up with a plan to transform offshore oil rigs into vertical bio-habitats that will help in cleaning oil spills and restoring damaged marine ecosystems.

Here are some of the most notable features of these vertical habitats, called the “Noah Oasis“:

  • Helps in absorbing spilled oil: In case of an oil spill incident, the floaters at the end of each pipe would swiftly absorb the released oil. This collected oil would be used in producing building materials and facilitating the growth of coral reef colonies.
  • Production of building materials and reviving biodiversity: This collected oil would be used in producing building materials like plastics that will be used to produce plastic-twig structure with the help of 3-D printing and hence facilitating the growth of coral reef colonies.
  • Create habitat: It will also serve as a habitat for marine life and migrating birds.
  • Shelter from future disasters: In case of a drastic sea level rise, this oil rig will provide shelter and will become the Noah Oasis.
