Gone are the times where you have to hold your breath, drink water or think of the last time you saw a white horse when you have singultus, otherwise known as the darn hiccup!

What Are Hiccups?

Singultus occurs when your diaphragm and intercostal muscles involuntarily contract. When this happens, the opening between the vocal folds (called the glottis) closes, and the “hic” sound immerges. They are not life-threatening, permitting that they don’t last for longer than two days consecutively.

One thing that we can all agree on is that they are an annoying occurrence, and we want to cure them as soon as possible. Well, instead of reverting to the archaic methods of ridding yourself of them, you can now sip them away with one gulp!

Based on scientific studies, it is reported that by swallowing, these two muscles are kept occupied and then prevent hiccups.

The FISST

Scientists have developed a straw-like L-shaped drinking device that they’ve dubbed the Forced Inspiratory Suction and Swallow Tool or FISST for short! It comprises a mouthpiece on one end and an adjustable valve cap at the bottom. It operates on the premise of the hiccupee merely placing the plastic straw in a glass of water and taking a sip, and poof! Gone are the hiccups!

How Does The FISST Work?

By targeting the two nerves that are responsible for the hiccups, the straw is used by the individual, who needs to suck vigorously on the mouthpiece. In turn, this then triggers the phrenic nerve that makes the diaphragm contract.

As the person swallows, it activates the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve then keeps the two nerves busy, responsible for creating the hiccup motion.

Although this is a relatively new project, it is already boasting an impressive success rate of 92%. There have been not controlled groups of study, but at an affordable price of just $14, the consumer has nothing to lose but try this ingenious device for themselves and having fun with it!

Why not try this device for yourself?
