It may sound like an automobile factory but the National Ignition Facility (NIF), finished in 2009, is the world’s largest laser with 192 intense laser beams delivering 60 times more energy than any previous system; it is capable of directing 2 million joules (J) of ultraviolet laser energy in billionth of a second pulses to a target chamber center.
