An Israeli start-up called Balena is putting up a fight against plastic and garbage accumulation by producing the world’s first fully compostable footwear. The company refers to itself as a material science firm.

The company recently announced the debut of its eco-chic BioCir Slides. These cinnamon-scented slides are made by using 100 percent biodegradable plastic.

Perfect alternative to current polluting shoe materials”

The company’s innovative technology aims to offer durable, flexible, and sustainable alternatives to plastics in fashion. These slides are made using pioneering plastic called BioCir. This special plastic will retain its shape until exposed to the specific bacteria and conditions of a compost facility. Balena has put forward a perfect alternative, as footwear developed with this new material is identical in look and feel to current products.

David Roubach, founder and chief executive of Balena, said in a statement: “The global fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters. At Balena, our goal is to help turn this around. We’re doing this by creating our own viable biodegradable plastic alternatives and fully circular systems that can be easily scaled and copied and pasted across the globe.”

“We hope our BioCir footwear shows the world that there is a real alternative: Fashion can be fabulous, functional and Earth-friendly. We’re proud to be the company opening the door for any fashion brand to start stepping into a more circular future.”
