Goodyear is Trying to Make Electricity Generating Tires

By: | March 20th, 2016

Goodyear has come up with an awesome concept of electricity generating tires which can help combat the biggest hurdle that an electric car faces.

Usually, electric cars come with heavy batteries, but they have limited capacity, so the range remains their limiting factor.

At the 85th Geneva International Motor Show, Goodyear unveiled its BHO3 concept tires. These amazing tires will generate electricity while moving and also when they are standing still.

The BHO3 tire converts heat and motion into electricity:

The ultra-black texture of the tires will let it absorb heat and light. As a result, the tire will become hot while standing still as well as due to friction while driving.

The tires will be lined with a fishnet pattern of thermo-piezoelectric material. When these piezoelectric materials are squeezed, it results in building up of electrical charge. So this material’s properties harvest energy by the friction of the tire rolling along the road.

As per Goodyear, the net will turn heat into electrical current and will also provide the structural support to the tire. In case of a puncture, it can continue to travel at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 80 km (50 miles). Moreover, this net also improves rolling resistance.

This BHO3 concept tire sounds great, but it is still a concept, and there are no details available regarding its price or its potential release date.
