Your Toenails Could Reveal Hidden Lung Cancer Risks from Radon

It might sound surprising, but your toenails could hold vital clues about whether you’ve been exposed to radon, an invisible and odorless gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Radon seeps naturally from rocks and soil into buildings, especially in areas with poor ventilation, and long-term exposure can silently increase cancer risk without any noticeable symptoms.

The Hidden Clues in Toenails

Researchers at the University of Calgary have discovered that toenails can serve as tiny biological archives, storing traces of radioactive lead (^210Pb), a byproduct of radon decay. Because nails grow slowly and accumulate minerals over time, they provide a long-term record of exposure that traditional air testing can’t easily capture. In their study, scientists compared toenail samples from people living in high-radon areas with those in low-radon environments and found a significant difference in radioactive lead levels between the two groups.

What the Study Found

The results revealed that individuals exposed to higher levels of radon had nearly four times more radioactive lead in their toenails than those with minimal exposure. Even people who had taken steps to reduce radon in their homes still showed measurable traces in their toenails years later, suggesting that the body retains evidence of past exposure long after it ends.

Future Implications

This discovery could revolutionize how doctors assess lung cancer risk, especially among non-smokers. Toenail testing may become a simple and noninvasive way to estimate long-term exposure to environmental hazards like radon. The research team is now conducting a large-scale study involving thousands of volunteers to validate the findings and better understand how these subtle chemical traces relate to real-world health outcomes.
