Scientists from University of Galway and an international team of marine researchers have uncovered hidden biological compounds inside coral reefs that may help create future medicines and biotechnology breakthroughs. Their findings suggest that coral ecosystems contain an enormous variety of previously unknown microbes capable of producing powerful natural chemicals.
As part of the Tara Pacific expedition, researchers studied coral reefs across the Pacific Ocean. The team collected microbiome samples from 99 reefs across 32 islands and identified hundreds of microbial species that scientists had never genetically documented before. Many of these microbes live closely with corals and actively produce bioactive molecules that researchers could eventually use in pharmaceuticals.
A Vast Underwater Molecular Library
The researchers discovered that coral-associated bacteria carry an extraordinary number of biosynthetic gene clusters — the genetic blueprints that create natural chemical compounds. The study suggests that the chemical diversity inside coral microbiomes may rival or even surpass that found in marine sponges, which scientists have long considered one of the ocean’s richest medical resources.
Scientists believe these compounds could help develop new antibiotics, anti-inflammatory treatments, and other advanced medical therapies. The discovery becomes even more important as antibiotic resistance continues to rise globally and weakens many existing medicines.

The study also highlights the environmental cost of coral reef destruction. Climate change, pollution, and warming oceans continue to damage reefs worldwide, threatening countless undiscovered molecules with medical value.
