After showcasing that its UroActive System works in men, UroMems now demonstrates that its advanced artificial urinary sphincter also works in women. The implant, which is inserted in the urethral duct in men and bladder neck in women, is a major breakthrough in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and could transform how millions of women manage this condition.

The UroActive System, the first automated AUS powered by a MyoElectroMechanical System (MEMS), was implanted in a female patient as part of an ongoing clinical study. Six months after the procedure, the patient has met all primary endpoints, remaining revision-free and experiencing restored continence.

UroMems’ achievement follows the successful results of the first-in-man feasibility study, signaling an imminent shift in SUI treatment for both women and men. Current options for treating SUI are inaccessible, inadequate, or burdensome, and the UroActive System solves them by using an automated and responsive approach that’s tailored to each patient’s physiology.

The best part about the new bionic implant is that it dynamically adjusts to the patient’s needs without requiring external manipulation, improving ease of use and quality of life.

“On behalf of the medical team who implanted the UroActive System in the first female patient, Drs. Christophe Vaessen, Aurelien Beaugerie and I are over the moon to see our first patient has returned to living life fully after years of struggling with SUI,” emphasized Professor Emmanuel Chartier-Kastler. “This promising therapy is a breakthrough technology in treating SUI in both women and men.”

The UroActive technology can also be incorporated into robotic-assisted surgical practices. The integration of smart automation in AUS technology could soon provide a more efficient, personalized, and minimally invasive treatment for millions of patients worldwide.

With an estimated 40 million Americans and 90 million Europeans affected by SUI, the need for effective, long-term solutions has never been greater. UroMems’ vision is clear — to restore dignity, confidence, and quality of life to those suffering from this often-overlooked condition.

As customary, the UroActive System needs regulatory approval to be integrated into the medical care sector. To its end, UroMems will continue making pivotal studies in Europe and the U.S., which should bring the technology a step closer to widespread adoption.
