A Growing Threat Beneath the Sea
UNESCO scientists are warning that a major tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea is not a distant possibility but an event that is likely to happen in the coming decades. According to the organization’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, there is a high probability that parts of the Mediterranean coastline could experience tsunami waves higher than one meter within the next 30 to 50 years. The warning has raised concerns across Europe and North Africa, where millions of people live along vulnerable coastal areas.
Although the Mediterranean is usually associated with calm beaches and tourism, the region sits on active tectonic boundaries. The African and Eurasian tectonic plates constantly interact beneath the sea, creating conditions for underwater earthquakes and landslides that can trigger tsunamis. Scientists say many people underestimate the risk because destructive tsunamis occur less frequently there than in the Pacific Ocean. However, historical evidence shows that the Mediterranean has experienced several deadly tsunami events over the centuries.
Why Experts Are Concerned
Researchers have identified the Hellenic Arc near Greece and parts of the western Mediterranean as some of the most dangerous tsunami zones in the region. In certain coastal locations, residents may have less than 20 minutes to react after a major offshore earthquake. That short warning time makes preparation extremely important.
UNESCO has expanded its tsunami monitoring systems by using underwater sensors, seismic stations, and tide gauges to detect unusual ocean activity. At the same time, the agency is helping coastal communities improve evacuation planning and public awareness programs. Several towns in countries such as Greece, Spain, France, and Türkiye have already received UNESCO’s “Tsunami Ready” recognition for strengthening their emergency response systems.
Experts believe these preparations could significantly reduce casualties when the next tsunami eventually strikes. While no one can predict the exact timing of such an event, scientists say the Mediterranean region can no longer ignore the danger waiting beneath its waters.
