China has made a historic leap in technology by launching the world’s first commercial underwater data center off the coast of Hainan Province. Developed by Beijing Highlander Digital Technology, this pioneering facility sits 35 meters beneath the sea, using the natural cooling properties of seawater to drastically reduce energy consumption. The underwater environment allows the data center to operate efficiently while minimizing its carbon footprint, setting a new benchmark in sustainable computing.
Massive and Powerful
The data center features a cabin weighing 1,433 tons, roughly equivalent to 1,000 passenger cars. Inside, it houses 24 server racks capable of supporting up to 500 servers. These servers can process over 4 million high-definition images in just 30 seconds, delivering the computing power of tens of thousands of conventional computers. By taking advantage of the cold ocean water, the facility consumes up to 90% less energy for cooling than traditional land-based data centers. Additionally, the center runs on renewable energy sources, including offshore wind farms, further enhancing its eco-friendly operation.
Strategic and Sustainable
This underwater data center is part of China’s broader “blue economy” initiative and aims to establish Hainan as a hub for technological innovation. Beyond its environmental benefits, it supports critical industries such as marine research, digital services, and smart manufacturing. The success of this project has prompted plans for a network of 100 similar underwater modules, which could transform China’s digital infrastructure while demonstrating the potential of combining marine resources with cutting-edge technology.
