An unconventional approach to missile launches
Ukraine is reportedly developing an innovative missile system that replaces conventional launch platforms with high-altitude balloons. The experimental weapon, known as DART, drifts into position before beginning its powered flight, offering a low-cost and potentially hard-to-detect way to conduct long-range precision strikes. Instead of relying on aircraft or large ground launchers, developers use balloons to carry the missile to high altitudes, making it more difficult for enemy defenses to detect and intercept the weapon before launch.
Designed to outsmart electronic warfare
Engineers designed DART to operate in environments where electronic warfare disrupts satellite navigation. The balloon lifts the missile to an altitude of roughly 11 to 18 kilometers before releasing it. The missile initially uses satellite navigation to determine its position, but it deliberately switches off the system as it descends. Once it reaches the planned altitude, a solid-fuel rocket motor ignites and propels the missile along a pre-programmed flight path. By removing its dependence on GPS during the final stage of flight, the missile can continue toward its target even when enemy forces jam or spoof navigation signals.
A low-cost weapon with strategic potential
Developers believe the balloon-launch system can lower operational costs while expanding options for long-range missions. Reports suggest the current prototype carries a relatively small payload for precision attacks on critical infrastructure. Some versions reportedly release conductive graphite filaments that can temporarily disable electrical systems by creating short circuits, rather than relying only on explosive force.
Although the DART missile remains in the testing phase and has not yet entered service with Ukraine’s armed forces, the project highlights the country’s push to develop affordable weapons that can withstand modern electronic warfare. If future trials prove successful, DART could offer Ukraine a new and unconventional tool for striking well-defended targets.
