This ‘Living Bandage’ Produces Healing Proteins Right Inside Your Wound

Treating chronic wounds has long challenged doctors because healing proteins often break down quickly or fail to remain at the injury site. Now, researchers at Rice University have developed a groundbreaking “living bandage” that continuously produces and delivers therapeutic proteins directly into wounds, helping the body repair damaged tissue more effectively. They recently described the innovative technology in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.

How the Living Bandage Works

Unlike conventional wound dressings that simply cover an injury, this new bandage functions as a miniature biological factory. Researchers embedded genetically engineered cells inside a biocompatible hydrogel matrix that protects the cells while allowing oxygen, nutrients, and therapeutic proteins to pass through.

The engineered cells continuously release cytokines—special signaling proteins that regulate inflammation, immune responses, and tissue regeneration. By supplying these proteins directly to the wound over time, the bandage creates an environment that encourages faster and more efficient healing.

Promising Results in Animal Studies

The research team tested the living bandage on mice and pigs with skin wounds. The treatment significantly accelerated wound closure compared with conventional approaches. The scientists also observed greater activity in genes linked to tissue regeneration and immune regulation. These findings suggest that the bandage actively stimulates the body’s natural repair processes instead of simply protecting the injured area.

A Platform for Future Regenerative Medicine

Researchers can easily reprogram the engineered cells to produce different combinations of cytokines, growth factors, or other therapeutic proteins depending on the patient’s needs. This flexibility could allow doctors to tailor the bandage for various medical conditions beyond chronic wounds. In the future, scientists may adapt the technology to treat other diseases that require localized, long-term protein delivery. Although researchers still need to evaluate the therapy in human clinical trials, the living bandage represents a promising advance in regenerative medicine and could pave the way for smarter, more effective treatments.
