The first inventor of the GPS is known as Ivan Getting. Easton and Bradford Parkinson, these three are accredited with the invention of the first known GPS systems used in navigation.
Getting was an electrical engineer and a physicist who led a research team with Louis Ridenour. This team was behind the development of the SCR-584, which was an automatic microwave system used as a fire-control tracking device.
This device was used to destroy many German bombs through anti-aircraft guns due to its tracking capabilities. This is the original concept behind today’s GPS systems, for which Dr. Gladys West also received recognition in the 1970s for her work in perfecting the original concepts.
