SpaceX is preparing to test a new spacecraft called Starfall, a compact reentry capsule that could transform how cargo is transported around the world. While the company has largely kept the project under wraps, recently released regulatory documents and launch information reveal ambitious plans that extend beyond commercial space manufacturing and into rapid military logistics.
A New Kind of Space Cargo Vehicle
Unlike traditional cone-shaped capsules, Starfall features a flat, disk-like design measuring about 3.1 meters across. The spacecraft can carry up to 1,000 kilograms of cargo and safely return it to Earth after traveling through space. Engineers designed the capsule to withstand the intense heat of reentry before deploying parachutes for a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
SpaceX plans to launch Starfall aboard either Falcon 9 or Starship rockets. Moreover, the company intends to manufacture the capsules at scale, potentially creating a fleet capable of frequent missions.
Military Supply Drops in Record Time
One of the most intriguing applications for Starfall is rapid point-to-point cargo delivery. According to FAA documents, the capsule could eventually transport critical supplies through space and deliver them to distant locations on Earth far faster than conventional aircraft or ships.
This capability has attracted interest from the military, which constantly seeks faster ways to move equipment, medical supplies, and other essential cargo during emergencies or conflicts. Instead of taking days to reach remote regions, future space-based delivery systems could complete missions in a matter of hours.
Beyond Military Logistics
Although rapid cargo transport has captured attention, Starfall’s primary purpose is to support space manufacturing. The capsule could return pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, semiconductors, and other products created in microgravity, where unique manufacturing conditions exist. Consequently, SpaceX hopes to help establish a commercial economy centered on producing high-value goods in orbit.
If upcoming demonstration flights succeed, Starfall could open the door to a future where products—and potentially military supplies—travel through space before arriving back on Earth faster than ever before.
