Space storms could switch train signals and cause serious accidents

Scientists are warning that powerful space weather events could pose an unexpected threat to railway safety. New research suggests that solar storms may interfere with train signaling systems, potentially causing signals to switch incorrectly and increasing the risk of accidents.

How Solar Storms Affect Rail Networks

Space storms, also known as geomagnetic storms, occur when the Sun releases massive bursts of charged particles and magnetic energy toward Earth. When these particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, they generate geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) that can travel through long conductive structures such as power lines, pipelines, and railway tracks.

Researchers found that these currents can interfere with track-circuit signaling systems used by many rail networks. These systems help detect the presence of trains and control signal lights. If disrupted, a signal that should display red could incorrectly turn green, creating a potentially dangerous situation for train operators.

Modeling the Risks

Scientists from Lancaster University examined how geomagnetic storms could affect railway signaling on electrified rail lines in the United Kingdom. Their models showed that space-weather-induced currents can cause both “right-side” and “wrong-side” failures. While a green signal turning red may lead to delays, a red signal turning green is far more concerning because it could allow trains to enter occupied sections of track.

The research also revealed that even storms weaker than some of the most extreme events in history may be capable of triggering these failures under certain conditions.

Preparing for Future Solar Storms

Although severe space-weather events are relatively rare, experts believe rail operators should consider them when designing and maintaining signaling infrastructure. Improved monitoring of solar activity and stronger protection systems could help reduce the risks posed by geomagnetic disturbances.

As society becomes increasingly dependent on complex electrical networks, understanding the effects of space weather is becoming more important. What begins as an eruption on the Sun could eventually influence critical transportation systems here on Earth, making preparedness an essential part of future rail safety.
