A New Approach to Cleaning Clothes in Space
Keeping clothes clean in space has long been a challenge. Unlike on Earth, astronauts cannot simply toss their garments into a washing machine. Water is a precious resource aboard spacecraft, and current missions often rely on astronauts wearing clothing repeatedly before eventually discarding it. As space agencies prepare for longer journeys to the Moon and Mars, researchers are searching for practical ways to maintain hygiene without consuming valuable water supplies.
A promising solution may come from an unusual source: cold plasma.
Harnessing Plasma to Fight Microbes
Scientists recently demonstrated a water-free cleaning system that uses cold plasma to eliminate bacteria from astronaut clothing and other fabric surfaces. Plasma is often called the fourth state of matter, consisting of electrically charged particles. Unlike the extremely hot plasma found in stars, cold plasma operates near room temperature, making it safe for delicate materials.
The experimental device generates a stream of plasma by electrically energizing a mixture of gases. This process creates highly reactive oxygen compounds that attack and destroy microorganisms. When directed at fabric samples, the plasma effectively reduced populations of bacteria commonly associated with human skin and previously detected aboard the International Space Station.
Why It Matters for Future Space Missions
Microbial growth poses a serious concern in space habitats. Bacteria can accumulate on clothing, bedding, and other soft materials, potentially affecting astronaut health and even damaging equipment. Existing cleaning methods, such as wipes and vacuuming, help but do not fully eliminate microbes.
Cold plasma offers several advantages. It requires little water, uses relatively simple hardware, and can sanitize fabrics without causing significant damage. As a result, astronauts could potentially disinfect clothing and living spaces more frequently during long-duration missions.
Although the technology is still in the testing phase, researchers believe compact plasma-based cleaning devices could become a valuable tool for future lunar bases and Mars expeditions. If successful, this innovation may finally provide a practical answer to one of space travel’s surprisingly stubborn problems: laundry.
