Wildfires have become one of the biggest environmental threats in recent years, destroying forests, wildlife habitats, and communities across the globe. Detecting a fire during its earliest moments is critical because even a small delay can allow flames to spread rapidly. To address this challenge, researchers have developed a flexible electronic sticker that can transform trees into smart fire-detection stations.
How the Technology Works
The newly designed sticker contains a wireless sensor that detects deep-ultraviolet (DUV) radiation, a type of light that flames emit during combustion. Unlike conventional fire-monitoring systems that rely on smoke or heat detection, this technology identifies fires at the ignition stage. The sensor also filters out ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, which reduces the risk of false alarms.
Researchers built the device using lightweight and flexible materials, allowing them to attach it directly to tree bark, leaves, and industrial structures. When the sensor detects signs of fire, it immediately sends data through Bluetooth to an artificial intelligence system. The AI platform then analyzes the information in real time and generates alerts when necessary.
More Than Just Fire Detection
The technology offers more than simple fire detection. By combining the sensor with machine-learning algorithms, researchers created a system that can estimate a fire’s type, intensity, and approximate distance. This capability helps firefighters and emergency responders assess situations more accurately and take action before a blaze grows out of control.
Researchers tested the electronic sticker under varying temperatures and humidity levels and found that it remained stable for more than six months. They also subjected the device to repeated bending and mechanical stress, yet it continued to function effectively. These results demonstrate its potential for long-term outdoor deployment.

As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires, governments and conservation agencies need better early-warning systems. Networks of these electronic stickers could continuously monitor forests, provide rapid alerts, and help authorities respond before small fires become large-scale disasters. By turning trees into active participants in fire detection, this innovation could strengthen efforts to protect ecosystems and communities from devastating wildfires.
