Scientists Turn Pumpkin Peel Waste into Biodegradable Packaging That Outperforms Plastic in Lab Tests

A Surprising Use for an Overlooked Food Waste

People usually throw away pumpkin peel during food processing. However, researchers have now turned this overlooked waste into an eco-friendly alternative to plastic packaging. Scientists from Kyushu University in Japan created a biodegradable food packaging material from discarded pumpkin peel that outperformed conventional plastic in several laboratory tests.

Researchers Turn Pumpkin Peel into Packaging

The research team converted pumpkin peel into tiny carbon quantum dots through a high-pressure heating process followed by freeze-drying. Next, they combined these particles with gelatin and plant-based cellulose to produce a thin biodegradable film. Instead of letting pumpkin waste end up in landfills, the team transformed it into a material that protects food while reducing plastic pollution.

The New Film Keeps Food Fresher

To evaluate its performance, the researchers wrapped cherry tomatoes in the pumpkin-based film and compared them with tomatoes stored in regular plastic packaging and without any packaging. After 20 days, the tomatoes covered with the biodegradable film remained fresher than the unpackaged ones. The new material also blocked harmful ultraviolet (UV) light more effectively than conventional plastic, slowed microbial growth, and helped preserve the tomatoes’ natural antioxidant activity.

Although conventional plastic retained moisture slightly better, the pumpkin-based film delivered strong overall performance. Laboratory tests also showed that the material remained non-toxic at the concentrations intended for food packaging. In the future, manufacturers could even spray the coating directly onto fruits and vegetables to provide protection without relying on traditional plastic packaging.

Turning Waste into a Valuable Resource

Pumpkin peel accounts for about 10–12% of the fruit’s weight, yet most of it ends up as waste. This new approach gives that by-product a valuable purpose. If commercialized, the material could reduce food waste, lower dependence on petroleum-based plastics, and support a more sustainable packaging industry. Although researchers still need to conduct additional studies, the findings demonstrate how simple agricultural waste can become a practical solution to an environmental challenge.
