A Remarkable Discovery in Central Africa
Scientists have officially identified a previously unknown monkey species deep within the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They named the species Colobus congoensis, while local communities have long called it Likweli. This remarkable primate is one of only a few new monkey species discovered in Africa over the past 75 years. The discovery reminds us that remote rainforests still hold many biological secrets waiting to be uncovered.
What Makes the Likweli Unique?
The Likweli displays glossy black fur, bright orange-cream markings around its mouth and nose, and a distinctive white patch beneath its tail. It also produces deep roaring calls that clearly differ from those of other colobus monkeys. Adult monkeys weigh about 7 kilograms (15 pounds) and spend most of their lives in the forest canopy, where they move through the trees in small social groups. Their elusive behavior helped them avoid scientific attention for many years.
Researchers first photographed the monkey in 2008 and returned to the region several times over the following years. They collected photographs, sound recordings, and DNA samples to study the animal in detail. Genetic analysis confirmed that the Likweli represents a separate species rather than a variation of an already known monkey. Scientists also found that it diverged from its closest relative several million years ago.
Protecting a Rare Discovery
The Likweli inhabits a small stretch of rainforest between the Lomami and Congo (Lualaba) rivers. Deforestation and hunting threaten its survival, prompting researchers to recommend listing the species as Endangered. Fortunately, Lomami National Park protects much of its known habitat.
Local communities played a vital role in this discovery by guiding researchers and sharing their knowledge of the forest. As scientists continue exploring the Congo Basin, they may uncover more unknown species hidden within one of the world’s most biodiverse and least-explored tropical rainforests.
