Scientists Develop Self-Healing Contact Lenses That Recover From Damage in an Hour

A Smarter Contact Lens Material

Scientists have developed an innovative contact lens material capable of repairing scratches on its own after just one hour of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. The breakthrough could help extend the lifespan of soft contact lenses while improving comfort and visual clarity for millions of users worldwide.

Researchers at Dankook University in South Korea designed the new material using a specialized hydrogel, a water-rich polymer commonly used in soft contact lenses. While hydrogels offer flexibility and comfort, they are vulnerable to small scratches and surface damage caused by daily handling, cleaning, and wear. Over time, these imperfections can reduce transparency and create sites where unwanted deposits accumulate.

How the Self-Healing Process Works

The newly developed hydrogel contains dynamic chemical bonds known as disulfide bonds. When exposed to UV light at room temperature, these bonds temporarily break apart and then reconnect, allowing the material to repair damaged areas. As a result, scratches gradually close and the lens regains much of its original structure without requiring heat or additional chemicals.

Laboratory tests demonstrated that scratched lenses recovered nearly 90% of their original performance after approximately one hour of UV exposure. This room-temperature healing process represents a significant improvement over previous self-healing materials, many of which required elevated temperatures that could affect the lens’s moisture content and comfort.

More Than Just Scratch Resistance

The researchers also enhanced the lens surface with a special antifouling coating. This coating helps repel protein deposits and other contaminants that commonly build up on contact lenses during use. Consequently, the lenses maintained better transparency and durability even after repeated abrasion tests.

Although the technology remains in the experimental stage, the results suggest a promising future for self-repairing eye-care products. If further testing confirms their safety and effectiveness, these next-generation lenses could reduce waste, lower replacement costs, and provide users with clearer vision for longer periods.
