A Growing Environmental Concern
The space industry is expanding at an unprecedented pace, with companies launching thousands of satellites to support global communications, navigation, and internet services. While these technologies offer significant benefits, a new study from University College London warns that they may also be creating an overlooked environmental problem. Researchers found that rocket launches and satellite re-entries are rapidly increasing pollution levels in the upper atmosphere, where particles can persist far longer than pollutants released near Earth’s surface.
The team focused on satellite “megaconstellations,” large networks of satellites operating in low Earth orbit. As companies continue to expand these networks, launch activity has surged. Between 2020 and 2025, the annual number of rocket launches nearly tripled, dramatically increasing the amount of material released into the atmosphere.
Why Upper-Atmosphere Pollution Matters
One of the most significant pollutants produced during rocket launches is black carbon, commonly known as soot. Unlike ground-level emissions, these particles can remain suspended in the upper atmosphere for years because weather systems cannot easily remove them. As a result, they have a much greater influence on climate.
Researchers found that soot released at high altitudes can affect the climate hundreds of times more strongly than similar emissions at the Earth’s surface. Their models suggest that pollution from satellite megaconstellations could account for more than 40% of the space sector’s climate impact by the end of this decade.
Time for Proactive Action
Although the overall environmental impact remains relatively small today, scientists believe governments and regulatory agencies should act now. The researchers emphasize that policymakers still have an opportunity to establish monitoring systems and environmental guidelines before satellite launches increase even further.
With tens of thousands of additional satellites expected to enter orbit in the coming years, understanding and managing the environmental consequences of space activities will become increasingly important. Early action could help ensure that the benefits of the growing space industry do not come at an unexpected cost to Earth’s atmosphere.
