Poop DNA Offers New Hope for the World’s Rarest Marsupial

Researchers at Edith Cowan University (ECU) have developed an innovative way to help protect one of the world’s most endangered mammals—the Gilbert’s potoroo. By studying DNA from the animal’s droppings, scientists are uncovering valuable insights that could strengthen conservation efforts and help prevent the species from disappearing forever.

Gilbert’s potoroo, a small marsupial native to Western Australia, is considered the rarest marsupial on Earth. Researchers estimate that fewer than 150 individuals remain in the wild. Scientists once considered the species extinct until they rediscovered it in 1994, making its survival a major focus for conservationists.

Decoding Diet Through DNA

Researchers used a technique called environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to analyze scat samples that they collected from the animals. Instead of disturbing the potoroos or directly observing their feeding habits, scientists examined genetic traces left behind in their feces.

The analysis revealed which fungi form a large portion of the marsupial’s diet. Understanding these food preferences is critical because conservation teams must identify habitats that can provide the resources the species needs to survive and reproduce.

The study also compared the diets of other fungi-eating mammals, including quokkas, quendas, and bush rats. Researchers discovered that these species consume many of the same foods, suggesting that areas where they coexist may provide suitable conditions for future Gilbert’s potoroo populations.

Building a Safer Future

Conservationists are exploring new relocation sites to establish “insurance populations” of the rare marsupial. This strategy became especially important after a devastating bushfire destroyed much of the species’ natural habitat in 2015.

Scientists believe the new DNA-based approach will help conservationists identify safe, food-rich environments for future translocations more effectively. Beyond helping Gilbert’s potoroo, the research demonstrates how modern genetic tools can support wildlife conservation and protect vulnerable species from extinction.
