When most people think about managing chronic pain, they often link it directly to weight loss. Carrying extra weight does put more strain on the body, especially on muscles and joints. However, researchers at the University of South Australia (UniSA) discovered that improving diet quality itself can ease pain, even when people don’t focus only on shedding kilos.

What the Study Found

In a three-month trial, researchers asked more than 100 Australian adults with overweight or obesity to follow a diet aligned with the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Participants ate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while cutting back on processed foods, alcohol, and sugary treats. By the end of the program, they had improved their diet quality significantly, and the share of participants reporting chronic musculoskeletal pain fell from nearly half to less than one in four.

Diet Quality Over Weight Loss

Most participants lost around seven kilograms and reduced their waist size and body fat. But researchers linked the biggest improvements in pain directly to better diet quality. This result shows that healthy eating, not just weight loss, drives pain relief. Nutrient-rich foods actively reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, two biological processes that worsen pain.

Why This Matters

These findings send a hopeful message to people living with persistent muscle and joint pain. You don’t have to wait for dramatic weight loss to feel better—choosing healthier foods can already make daily life less painful. Health professionals can now use this insight to integrate nutrition into pain management programs. And individuals can take comfort in knowing that every wholesome choice on the plate can bring them one step closer to relief.
