New Space Race Heats Up as China and Russia Target the Moon’s South Pole

By: | May 19th, 2025

In a bold step forward in space exploration, China and Russia have signed an agreement to construct a nuclear power plant on the Moon by 2035. This groundbreaking project marks a new chapter in their joint efforts to dominate space innovation and infrastructure.

What the Project Involves

To begin with, the nuclear reactor will provide consistent and reliable energy, especially during the Moon’s 14-day-long nights when solar power becomes ineffective. Instead of relying on human astronauts, the two nations plan to deploy robotic systems to build the power station autonomously between 2033 and 2035.

Furthermore, the location of the ILRS near the Moon’s south pole is not coincidental. This region is rich in resources such as water ice and Helium-3, which could support long-term human habitation and power future fusion energy technologies. Consequently, this area has become a prime target for lunar missions.

Step-by-Step Lunar Ambitions

The development of the ILRS will occur in phases. China will launch its Chang’e-8 mission in 2028, which aims to test vital technologies required for base construction. Following that, a series of heavy-lift rocket missions will deliver infrastructure components, expanding the base through 2035.

In addition, China has invited 17 other countries—including South Africa, Egypt, Venezuela, and Pakistan—to participate in the ILRS initiative. This inclusive approach signals Beijing’s intent to build an international coalition for lunar research and development.

Global Reactions and Rivalries

Meanwhile, the U.S. and its allies have raised concerns about the geopolitical implications of this China-Russia lunar partnership. American officials worry that China might try to assert territorial claims on the Moon—just as it has done in the South China Sea. However, Chinese space authorities have denied these claims, stating that the lunar base is intended solely for peaceful scientific research.
