Meet Jia Jia, the New Interactive “Robot Goddess”

By: | April 28th, 2016

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have introduced the stunningly realistic-looking interactive humanoid robot nicknamed “Jia Jia” to the world. They claim the AI humanoid is the most realistic ever made.

Developed by Chen Xiaoping and his colleagues, Jia Jia took three years to complete. Dubbed ‘robot goddess,’ Jia Jia is designed with natural eye movement and speech that syncs with its lip movements.

It can move its body, can show micro-expressions, and it can even respond to human conversation. When this humanoid robot was presented before the local Chinese media, it greeted the audience. She said, “Hello everyone, I’m Jia Jia. Welcome!” She also shied away when journalists tried to take her pictures. She said, “Don’t come too close to me when you are taking a picture. It will make my face look fat.”

Xiaoping reports that the team’s next step is to make it possible for her to laugh and cry. Xiaoping explained, “We hope to develop the robot so it has deep learning abilities. We will add facial expression recognition and make it interact more deeply with people.”
