A breakthrough for emergency medicine
Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a spray-on powder that can stop severe bleeding in as little as one second. The innovation could provide a faster and more effective way to treat traumatic injuries, where every second can determine whether a patient survives. By rapidly sealing wounds, the new material may improve emergency care in ambulances, hospitals, disaster zones, and military settings.
How the powder works
The new material, known as AGCL powder, is sprayed directly onto a bleeding wound. When it comes into contact with blood, it reacts with naturally occurring calcium ions and quickly forms a tough hydrogel that seals the injury. This protective barrier helps blood clot almost instantly while adapting to wounds of different shapes and depths. Unlike conventional dressings, the powder can reach irregular injuries that are difficult to cover with standard bandages.
Strong performance in laboratory tests
The KAIST research team created the powder from naturally derived biomaterials, including alginate, gellan gum, and chitosan. These ingredients work together to support the body’s natural clotting process while absorbing large amounts of blood. During laboratory and animal studies, the powder stopped bleeding faster than several existing hemostatic products. Researchers also observed lower blood loss, improved tissue repair, enhanced blood vessel growth, and excellent antibacterial properties. In addition, the material remained stable for up to two years, even when stored at room temperature under humid conditions.
A promising future for trauma care
Severe bleeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths following traumatic injuries. Technologies that control blood loss within seconds could significantly increase survival rates before patients reach a hospital. Although the spray-on powder must complete further testing and receive regulatory approval before clinical use, the early results highlight its potential to transform emergency medicine. If future human trials confirm its safety and effectiveness, this fast-acting powder could become an essential tool for first responders, surgeons, and military medics, helping save lives when immediate bleeding control is critical.
