Using advanced live imaging, researchers observed exactly how the jellyfish repairs damaged tissue. When a small wound forms, cells at the edge rapidly spread across the injured area and move toward one another. As soon as they meet, a ring of contractile proteins tightens like a drawstring, sealing the wound within minutes.
The process changes when the injury is larger. Instead of relying on individual cells, an entire sheet of epithelial cells moves together to cover the damaged region before the protein ring closes the remaining gap.
