A New Era of Underwater Living Begins
Living beneath the ocean’s surface has long captured human imagination. Now, that vision is becoming reality. Ocean engineering company DEEP has deployed Vanguard, a human habitat on the seafloor at Tennessee Reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Positioned about 17 meters (56 feet) underwater, the habitat allows scientists to live and work beneath the sea for several days without returning to the surface. As a result, researchers can spend more time studying the ocean and less time traveling back and forth.
Built for Science and Exploration
Vanguard supports up to four aquanauts during short-term research missions. The pressurized habitat serves as both a laboratory and a living space, enabling scientists to study coral reefs, marine ecosystems, and the effects of climate change more efficiently. Moreover, researchers can collect and analyze marine samples directly underwater instead of transporting them to the surface first. This approach helps preserve delicate specimens and improves the accuracy of scientific observations.
In addition, onboard sensors continuously monitor environmental conditions and gather valuable long-term data, even when no one is inside the habitat.
How People Live Underwater
Life inside Vanguard shares many similarities with life aboard a spacecraft. A surface buoy supplies electricity, breathable air, and communication through an umbilical cable. Meanwhile, crew members enter and exit the habitat through a moon pool, which lets them move directly into the surrounding ocean without flooding the living space.
The team uses saturation diving, a technique that allows divers to remain underwater for extended periods after their bodies adjust to the surrounding pressure. Therefore, scientists avoid repeated ascents and descents, making underwater missions safer, longer, and more productive.
A Step Toward Permanent Ocean Habitats
Vanguard marks the first step in DEEP’s broader vision for underwater living. The company is already developing a larger habitat called Sentinel, which will support longer missions and more advanced scientific research. Ultimately, these underwater habitats could transform marine science, strengthen coral reef conservation, help train astronauts for extreme environments, and bring humans closer to establishing a lasting presence beneath the ocean.
