Humanoid Robots Step Into Chip Factories for the First Time in Europe

For the first time, humanoid robots are being deployed inside active semiconductor production environments, marking a major shift in how advanced chips may be manufactured in the years ahead. In a groundbreaking move, European semiconductor leader STMicroelectronics has partnered with Italian robotics firm Oversonic Robotics to bring AI-powered humanoid robots directly onto the factory floor. This step signals a transition from experimental automation to real-world industrial deployment.

From Research Labs to Chip Factories

Until now, humanoid robots have largely remained confined to research labs and controlled test sites. However, that boundary is now being crossed. The collaboration focuses on Oversonic’s cognitive humanoid robot, RoBee, which is designed to operate safely alongside human workers. Notably, the first robot has already begun work at STMicroelectronics’ advanced packaging and testing facility in Malta. Over time, additional deployments are expected across other manufacturing sites as the program expands.

Semiconductor manufacturing is one of the most demanding industrial processes, requiring extreme precision, cleanroom compatibility, and uninterrupted workflows. As a result, traditional automation systems often face limitations. In contrast, humanoid robots can navigate human-designed spaces while handling repetitive or physically demanding tasks. Moreover, STMicroelectronics believes these robots can improve operational efficiency and worker safety, while reducing the need for costly factory redesigns.
