Hitachi – U.S. Commerce Pact to Modernize the Grid (Transformers, HV)

Hitachi signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to spur investment in grid modernization, with a focus on high-voltage equipment and new U.S. transformer capacity. The pact arrives as electricity demand jumps on the back of AI data centers and large industrial loads, elevating transmission constraints from a background problem to a front-page issue. 

Hitachi said it will work with Commerce, utilities, and customers to identify specific U.S. projects and capacity gaps.

What could change on the ground? First, more large power transformers – the long-lead equipment at the heart of transmission upgrades. Hitachi Energy has already outlined a $1 billion U.S. manufacturing push, including a new transformer factory in Virginia, plus component expansions across several states. The pact adds a policy bridge that can help move projects faster – from siting and supplier awards to workforce planning. For EPCs and utilities, that looks like a clearer runway for HV corridors serving data-center clusters.

There’s also a services angle. One day after the pact, Hitachi Energy took a minority stake in Shermco, a U.S. electrical services firm. This move positions the duo as a leading grid services platform for data centers and utilities. With lead times still tight, keeping existing fleets healthy is as critical as adding new steel. Expect more condition based maintenance, lifecycle testing, and outage planning tools to follow.
