Is Gehry’s Berlin Skyscraper Design Too Heavy for Its Site?

By: | July 4th, 2014

Frank Gehry recently won a competition for Germany’s tallest apartment tower but now faces a major hurdle with his design.

Set for construction on Alexanderplatz, many believe the 150-meter building is potentially too heavy to be built close to the U5 branch of the U-Bahn tunnel for fears it will literally crush the tunnel.

Among other questions, BVG is asking for clarity on whether trains can run under the building during the construction process.

Even with all the safety concerns, developer Hines Property Group says the company is “heading in the right direction” and is “confident that a decision will be made soon.”
