An abandoned island in the Han River is now set for a remarkable revival, thanks to the vision of Heatherwick Studio, one of the UK’s most influential design firms. With this project, they will transform Nodeul Island in Seoul from an overlooked area into a thriving green sanctuary where nature, art, and city life meet in harmony.

A New Life for an Overlooked Island

For decades, people largely ignored Nodeul Island, despite its central position in the city. Now, Heatherwick Studio plans to convert this patch of open, neglected land into a vibrant public space. The design centers around a raised, gently curving walkway that weaves across the island like a floating ribbon. As a result, visitors can stroll above lush plantings, streams, and shaded rest areas, enjoying a peaceful, elevated view of the river and skyline.

Designed to Feel Alive and Welcoming

Heatherwick Studio often blends architecture with emotion and natural warmth in its projects. In this case, the designers aim to create a space that feels less like a conventional park and more like a living, breathing landscape. Native plants, seasonal flowers, and layered greenery will attract wildlife and encourage biodiversity. Moreover, small performance zones, cultural activity spaces, and quiet sitting areas will make the park both lively and restorative.

A Symbol of Regeneration

This transformation highlights Seoul’s continued push to build people-centered urban environments—places where residents can stay, relax, and reconnect with nature. Ultimately, when completed, the island will stand as a landmark of renewal and creative urban thinking.
