Forget Rooftops—Switzerland Is Installing Solar Panels on Train Tracks

Turning Railway Tracks into Power Plants

Switzerland has launched an innovative experiment that could reshape renewable energy generation. A Swiss startup called Sun-Ways has installed solar panels directly between railway tracks on an active rail line near Buttes in western Switzerland. As a result, passenger trains now travel over the solar-equipped section, making it the first operational test of its kind in the world.

The pilot project features 48 removable solar panels spread across a 100-meter stretch of railway. Together, these panels deliver an installed capacity of about 18 kilowatts and can generate roughly 16 megawatt-hours of electricity each year. The system feeds this clean electricity directly into the local power grid, thereby supporting renewable energy production without requiring additional land.

A Design Built for Real-World Railways

Unlike conventional solar farms, engineers designed the Sun-Ways system specifically for railway infrastructure. They developed a removable mounting mechanism that allows maintenance crews to install or remove panels quickly whenever track work becomes necessary. Furthermore, a specialized rail-mounted machine places the panels efficiently, which could simplify large-scale deployment in the future.

Swiss transport authorities approved the project after conducting extensive safety reviews and tests. Over the next three years, researchers will closely monitor how the panels perform under daily train traffic and varying weather conditions. In addition, they will evaluate maintenance needs, track the buildup of dirt and debris, and assess any effects on railway operations.

A Glimpse of the Future

The project highlights how communities can use existing infrastructure more effectively. Railway networks extend across vast distances, yet much of the space between the tracks remains unused. By transforming these areas into solar power generators, countries can expand renewable energy production while avoiding the use of farmland and natural habitats.

If the Swiss trial succeeds, railway operators in other countries may adopt similar systems. Consequently, this small experimental track could pave the way for a new approach that combines transportation and clean energy generation. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how innovative thinking can unlock renewable energy opportunities in places that people have long overlooked.
