DOE Fusion Roadmap Targets Commercial Power in the Mid-2030s

The U.S. Department of Energy has released a finalized roadmap for commercial fusion power, setting out a national strategy to move fusion from scientific progress toward pilot plants and future power generation.

Announced on June 9, the Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap brings together science, engineering, infrastructure, workforce planning, supply chains, and commercialization priorities. The stated goal is to support fusion pilot plants and commercial fusion power in the mid-2030s.

Fusion has long been described as the energy source of the future. Yet the industry is now entering a more practical phase. Private investment, stronger computing tools, improved materials research, and new experimental facilities are pushing the conversation beyond laboratory milestones. The question is becoming more industrial: what must be built, qualified, staffed, and supplied to make fusion power work at scale?

The roadmap focuses on three major priorities designed to move fusion technology from research programs toward commercial deployment:

  • Build Critical Fusion Infrastructure: DOE plans to strengthen facilities, testing capabilities, and technology development resources needed to close remaining gaps in fusion materials, components, and engineering.
  • Accelerate Research Through Advanced Computing: The roadmap highlights the growing role of high-performance computing, simulation tools, and artificial intelligence in speeding fusion science and technology development.
  • Expand the Commercial Fusion Ecosystem: Public-private partnerships, domestic supply chains, workforce development, and commercialization pathways are identified as key building blocks for future fusion pilot plants and power generation projects.

Together, these priorities reflect a shift from isolated research milestones toward a coordinated national strategy that connects scientific progress with industrial readiness.

The scale of coordination is notable. DOE said the roadmap was developed with input from more than 800 scientists and engineers, along with more than 15 private companies, over 10 national laboratories, and more than 70 universities. The agency said more than $10 billion in private investment is already advancing fusion technologies and demonstration projects.

For industry readers, the roadmap matters because fusion is not only a physics challenge. It requires specialty materials, advanced manufacturing, magnets, power electronics, vacuum systems, robotics, control software, construction expertise, skilled labor, and long-term project finance. Each of those areas creates opportunities and bottlenecks.

The newly established Office of Fusion will help implement the roadmap, with future progress tied to public-private collaboration and Congressional funding.

Commercial fusion remains difficult. Still, the roadmap shows how the United States plans to turn scattered progress into a coordinated industrial push. If milestones hold, fusion could become one of the defining energy infrastructure stories of the next decade.
