The terms “sea” and “ocean” are often used interchangeably, but they refer to distinct bodies of water with notable differences in size, depth, and characteristics. Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface, stretching across vast distances, and are divided into five major ones—Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. Seas, however, are smaller bodies of water that are typically found at the edges of oceans, often partially enclosed by land, such as the Mediterranean or Red Sea.
Size Matters: Oceans Are Vast, Seas Are Smaller
Oceans are significantly larger than seas. While oceans stretch across the globe, seas are often confined to specific coastal areas or regions. Some seas, like the Mediterranean, are partially enclosed by land, making them distinct from the open expanses of the oceans.
Depth Differences: Oceans Are Much Deeper
Oceans are much deeper than seas. The average depth of oceans is around 12,080 feet (3,682 meters), and certain areas, like the Mariana Trench in the Pacific, are even deeper. Seas, on the other hand, are generally shallower, which makes them more susceptible to local environmental conditions such as tides and temperature.
Salinity: Varying Levels in Seas and Oceans
Salinity levels can differ between seas and oceans. Oceans usually maintain a consistent salinity, while seas, particularly those that are more enclosed or fed by freshwater rivers, can have lower salinity levels. For instance, the Baltic Sea is known for its lower salinity compared to open ocean waters.
Location and Influence: Seas Are Closely Linked to Land
Oceans are global and stretch across vast areas, whereas seas are often located near coastlines and may be bordered by land on several sides. This proximity to land influences the ecosystems, biodiversity, and local climates of seas, making them more affected by surrounding geography.
