An In Depth Look at Linear Actuators and Solar Power

By: | September 20th, 2015

Solar energy is considered to be the power source of the future. Conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels are being depleted, so there is a need to find alternative energy sources. Additionally, recent global concerns, including greenhouse gas emissions, call for the use of alternative energy sources.

The emission of greenhouse gasses is arguably the major cause of climate change and global warming. Solar power is among the alternative sources of energy that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a nearly limitless sustainable source of energy. Thus, 12-volt actuators would contribute to the rise of solar energy given that automation and actuators are necessary for enhancing the efficiency of solar arrays.

Linear actuators could be used in automating solar arrays and panels in order to enhance their efficiency as well as providing a boost to their overall power. Conventional solar panels are normally installed in such a way that they stay in a single static position so that they can absorb maximum energy possible during the day’s peak hours. However, using linear actuators allows the solar panels to be mobile. It is worth noting that the position of the sun changes due to the rotation of the earth and it is necessary for solar panels to move in accordance with the position of the sun.

Linear actuators can adjust a solar panel’s angle automatically so that the panel always faces the sun’s direction throughout the day. This facilitates maximum absorption of solar energy. Linear actuators also facilitate changes to the angle of arrays through remote control rather than altering angles manually. This helps in increasing the solar array’s efficiency by up to 50 percent.

In addition, automated solar arrays can be taken care of much more easily than conventional non-automated models. Unlike older models, automated solar arrays also operate for longer periods of time. Older solar models also include machinery that poses a risk of leakage of oil since oil is more susceptible to harsh weather conditions.

The use of 12V linear actuators also facilitates easier installation of solar panels because all that is needed is a source of power and a control method for the array to be functional. PA-17 industrial actuators, together with a PA-17 control box, are suitable for this array. PA-17 industrial actuators are capable of withstanding a force of approximately 2000 Ibs., which ensures that the solar arrays always remain secure and safe.

Hopefully, when one is looking for an appropriate alternative energy source, solar energy comes to mind first, especially because of the additional features offered linear actuators. While solar arrays are often efficient, 12V linear actuators enhance their efficiency for collecting solar energy. Linear actuators also ensure that the solar arrays remain functional for longer periods of time than older models. This is beneficial in that it eliminates the need to re-install solar arrays as often. Linear actuators come in various designs as well, so one can choose the linear actuators that best suit his or her array design.
