The global optical component market reached $3.6 billion in 2012 and is expected to reach $12.3 billion by 2019 or a CAGR of 19.9%. Clearly, this is a rapidly expanding market and for good reason: advanced optical systems make many technologies significantly better such as those used in manufacturing settings.

What are Optical Systems?

Some recent books on optics include topics such as polarized light and optical systems, applications of light, noises in optical communications, photonic systems, chiral nanophotonics, the properties of plasmonic systems, independent variables for optical surfacing systems, multi-species systems in optical lattices, optical sensors, devices and systems, electromagnetic waves in complex systems, and the manufacture of optical glass and optical systems.

To make all of this concrete, many of these concepts are studied by engineers who design, manufacture, test, and assemble submarines, tanks, missiles, fighter jets, UAVs, and more.

What Leading Optical Manufacturers Supply

One example of an optical systems manufacturer is Marshall Electronics, which manufactures high-performance tracking platforms and integration services. Another manufacturer, Arizona Optical Systems (AOS) is a leader in manufacturing precise systems for aerospace and astronomical applications. And finally, Kaiser Optical Systems is a world leader in Raman Spectroscopy, spectral graphic instrumentation, and applied holographic technology.

Critical to Advanced Economies

DARPA, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which commissions advanced research for the US Department of Defense (DOD) recently signed a contract with Lockheed Martin worth $7.1 million to do cutting-edge research on optical systems.

According to DARPA, the world is entering a new age of optics for defense. Typically, optical technology used by the military have been large and heavy and newly designed optic systems will leverage newly engineered materials and design technology such as 3D motion capture.
