Clear Vision, No Donor Needed: First 3D-Printed Cornea Changes Everything

A Breakthrough at Rambam Health Care Campus

Doctors at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, Israel, restored sight in a legally blind patient using a fully 3D-bio-printed cornea — the first procedure of its kind anywhere in the world. The surgery, performed in late October 2025, marks a turning point for regenerative eye medicine. Soon after the operation, Rambam’s specialists reported that the patient began recognizing faces and reading text, confirming the early success of the PB-001 implant.

How a Donor Cell Turns Into a Transparent New Cornea

Biotech company Precise Bio created the PB-001 implant using human corneal cells that technicians expanded and printed into a transparent, layered structure. In fact, the team transformed a single donor cornea into enough biological material to produce multiple implants, directly addressing global shortages of donor tissue. Moreover, the bioprinting system reproduces the cornea’s natural clarity and strength, giving surgeons a dependable and consistent alternative to traditional grafts.

A Surgical Technique That Opens New Possibilities

During the surgery, surgeons inserted the thin printed cornea through a small incision and watched it unfold naturally inside the eye. As a result, this minimally invasive approach reduced surgical trauma and encouraged the implant to integrate smoothly. Furthermore, early follow-up examinations confirmed that the graft settled well and steadily improved the patient’s vision.

What Comes Next for 3D-Printed Vision Restoration

This first-in-human operation forms part of a Phase 1 clinical trial designed to evaluate safety and early effectiveness. Going forward, researchers expect trial data to clarify how widely bioprinted corneas can be used. If the results continue to hold, this technology may ultimately transform treatment for millions living with corneal blindness, especially in regions where donor tissue remains scarce.
