From Mercury to Gold: How It Works

The team proposes to bombard mercury isotopes with a precise stream of neutrons generated by a fusion reactor. This process could reduce the number of protons in mercury-198, turning it into gold-197, the only stable isotope of gold.

Although the cost of producing gold this way currently exceeds its market value, the technology could deliver much more. Scientists believe it may lead to new methods for nuclear waste cleanup, rare material creation, and sustainable resource production, potentially revolutionizing multiple industries.
