Scientists Discover a Brand-New Hydrothermal Pool
Yellowstone National Park has once again demonstrated how quickly its geothermal landscape can change. Researchers recently discovered a new boiling pool in the park’s Biscuit Basin that appeared within just a couple of days. What makes the discovery especially remarkable is that scientists had been walking across the exact location only two days earlier, unaware that the ground beneath them was about to transform.
The newly formed feature is a gray, vigorously boiling pool measuring roughly 21 by 17 feet. It emerged sometime between June 14 and June 16 after a small hydrothermal explosion shook the area on June 13. Fortunately, the event occurred before visitors entered the basin, and no injuries were reported.
Born from Steam and Pressure
According to scientists from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, the pool formed when extremely hot groundwater, trapped beneath the surface under immense pressure, suddenly flashed into steam. The rapid expansion fractured the ground and created several new vents. Soon afterward, the surface collapsed, leaving behind a crater that quickly filled with boiling, mineral-rich water.
Researchers also observed loud thumping sounds coming from the pool as steam bubbles formed and collapsed beneath the water’s surface. A few days later, the feature briefly began shooting water 20 to 30 feet into the air before settling down again.
A Constantly Changing Landscape
Although the new pool may seem mysterious, it is another reminder that Yellowstone’s hydrothermal system is constantly evolving. The park sits above a vast volcanic hotspot where underground heat continuously reshapes the landscape. New hot springs, steam vents, and geysers can appear unexpectedly as water, rock, and heat interact below the surface.
Scientists will continue monitoring the new feature to determine whether it eventually becomes a permanent geyser or gradually quiets down. Either way, the discovery highlights the importance of staying on designated boardwalks in Yellowstone, where the seemingly solid ground can conceal powerful geothermal activity just beneath the surface.
