By utilizing technologies licensed from a company called Thinfilm, Xerox has developed printable electronic labels with upwards of 36 bits of rewritable encrypted memory built right in.

While it may not sound like much, 36 bits is enough to hold 68 billion points of data encompassing shipment and travel details, serial numbers, and medical information such as refills and dosages.

The neat thing about the printable electronic labels is the fact that they can be decoded with a wireless reader attached to your smartphone or for more secretive shipments, with cryptographic security.

We’ll have to wait and see how the technology fares but for now, it represents a way for manufacturers to have one leg up on counterfeiters.
