Not Quite a Hoverboard But Onewheel is Pretty Close

By: | January 20th, 2014

Avid snowboarder and consumer products engineer Kyle Doerksen introduced an innovative product called Onewheel at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. In an attempt to create the feel of snowboarding on the street, Doerksen’s Onewheel is basically a self-balancing electric skateboard.

The first prototype was too bulky but still fun to ride and after positive feedback from peers, Doerksen was able to eliminate the original chain drive and heavy acid batteries to make Onewheel the product it is today.

Onewheel has a top speed of 12 mph, similar to a Segway, and features a 6-inch wide go-kart tire that houses the electric hub motor of the board. Critical gyro and accelerometer sensors help you turn, slow down, stop and go, depending on how the rider shifts his or her weight.

Onewheel is currently available for presale on Kickstarter. Own one for $1,299!
