An Incredible Melting Chrome Orb … Or Is It an Ilusion?

By: | October 3rd, 2014

Isn’t it incredible to watch a ball of metal ooze all over the place?

It definitely looks cool but even cooler is the fact that your mind is actually playing a trick on you.

The trippy animation comes from Takeshi Murata, who utilized old-school animation principles in order to capture the orb ripples and drips.

The illusion/animation is called Melter 3-D and Murata used repeating zoetrope animations along with some high-tech gloss in order to trick you.

Essentially, syncing the spinning of the sphere with the blinking of the strobe is what creates the looping melting effect.

More:

  • The sphere rotates at 70 rpm
  • The strobe flashes 15 times per rotation
  • Sphere spins and the strobe flashes every 24 degrees
