The eGallon: How Much Cheaper Is It to Drive on Electricity?

You can’t miss the media hype surrounding electric vehicles and supposed savings in running costs. Your interest is now piqued. Now you want to calculate how much you would save running electric compared to your gasoline car.

How much will an electric car cost in kWh units compared to a tank of gas? How much will it cost you each month?

The U.S. Department of Energy has developed an eGallon calculator that will remove the guess work from your calculations.

eGallon vs Gasoline Comparison:
Let’s say you fill your car with 15 gallons of gasoline every week.
Cost per 15 Gallon tank: $3.41 x 15 = $51.15 per tank

Equivalent cost to run your electric vehicle = $1.02 x 15 = $15.30 per equivalent distance traveled when compared with a tank of gas.

52 tanks for the year:

Gasoline Cost: $51.15 x 52 = $2659.80 per year

Electricity Cost: $15.30 x 52 = $795.60 per year

Battery life, cost and maintenance are somewhat unknown at this stage. The electric vehicle market is maturing quickly, with many viable electric vehicle options available today. Within the next 5 years we’ll see price reductions and better battery technology.
